This forested peak just outside Nuoro, the chief town of Sardinia’s interior, offers true tranquillity and spectacular views. Near the top of this mountain of 955 metres stands a huge bronze statue of the Redeemer (Redentore), poised in an attitude of swirling motion over the immense void of the valley below. The figure is the destination for a colourful religious procession three destination holidays with sardinian experiencesthat weaves up from the town during Nuoro’s most important festival. Nuoro itself is known for its handicrafts, artistic and literary associations, and a trio of first-class museums and galleries. The old quarter is well worth checking out—not least for the delectable dishes served up in its authentic and extremely good-value trattorias.

Sited at the base of sheer 900-metre mountains, this isolated resort was once a nondescript settlement huddled three destination holidays with sardinian experiencesaround a small harbour, and until recently only accessible by boat. Now it’s home to a cluster of hotels, restaurants and villas, though these have not spoiled Cala Gonone’s sense of seclusion, even in summer when the place gets pretty lively. There are some great beaches within walking distance, but most visitors are here for the isolated sandy coves lying up and down the coast, which count among Sardinia’s finest beaches and are all accessible on boat excursions from the harbour. Cala Gonone lies around 90 minutes’ drive south of Olbia Airport.
