Walking Tour of Alghero
Experience the multiple charms of this lively Mediterranean resort
This leisurely walking tour explores Alghero, one of Sardinia’s most attractive towns, 45km (23 miles) north of Bosa. With its yacht marina and fishing boats, its medieval walls encompassing cobbled lanes and its smart boutiques, Alghero has a buzzy, touristy feel while retaining its authentic historical flavour. The full excursion takes around 4hr.
Led by our local expert, you’ll see the cultural highlights of this ancient town that has been dubbed Little Barcelona for its cultural and historical links with the Aragonese city that colonized it in the 14th and 15th centuries. Your guide will provide you with a historical outline of the town and put its monuments in context. All museum charges are included.
Among the main attractions of Alghero, you’ll see:
- The cathedral Originally 16th-century, modified over time, it boasts an impressive dome and a creamy marble central altar from the 18th century, with Neoclassical and Baroque lateral chapels
- The cathedral museum The former church of the Rosario holds this collection of sacred treasures, including paintings, Catalan silverware, wooden statues and crucifixes
- Defensive walls and towers No visit to Alghero is complete without a stroll along the stout girdle of walls, taking in the seven towers that dominate the old town
- The coral museum Sardinia’s northwestern coast and Alghero in particular are famous for the coral found hereabouts, as explained and beautifully illustrated in this museum gallery
At the end of the tour, you’ll have an hour free for doing any other sightseeing that appeals, a little shopping or just a drink in a café.
